MORE ABOUT TREEBEARD'S SPICE MIXES

Pure spice and herb blends, hand-mixed and hand-packed, for you to enjoy as a healthy part of your everyday life.

All our mixes are complete and ready to use in all styles of food preparation: cooking, grilling, braaiing, and whatever else you can think of. Why should you search all over for "galangal" to make an authentic Thai Seasoning? Or "tarragon" for a nice French Mix? Let us do the searching and mixing, and you do the cooking!

Some can be enjoyed with olive oil and chunky bread as a dukka (if you wish, add chopped nuts and sesame seeds for more crunch).

You can also combine these mixes for your own unique creations: Tuscan Mix and Chip Mix with olive oil on potato wedges; or Greek Mix and Cajun on chicken; or Greek mix or Mixed Herbs into (or on top of) your bread dough.

As long as you enjoy it – that's the cardinal rule.

These blends contain only spices, and just enough salt to make the flavours pop. No gluten. No additives, preservatives, volumisers, flavourants, or anti-caking agents. Packed in a facility that also handles nutmeg and peanuts.

Note that these are pure spice blends. It is more concentrated than commercial blends, and should therefore be used more sparingly.

SALT
Most mixes contain just enough salt to enhance the flavours, and will be suitable for a low-sodium diet. Most people would like to add more salt, which can be done during preparation or cooking, or as seasoning at the table.

Everyday Seasoning, Chip Mix, Redneck Chipmix, Black, and Red were originally intended as table seasoning, and therefore contain enough salt to be used as is. Apparently some of our customers now also use it during food preparation, cooking and braaiing, as well as for table seasoning!

Alice The Third is a totally salt-free seasoning for such diets, and Curry, Mixed Herbs, Herbes de Provence (French Mix), Shichimi Togarashi (Japanese seasoning), Advieh Khoresh (Persian Mix), Garam Masala, Indian 5-spice, and Sunset Gold, contain no salt.

SUGAR
Unless listed in the ingredients, our blends do not contain sugar.

Chip Mix and Ras El Hanout contain raw brown sugar as an essential part of the flavour profile.

Aladdin's Magic, Winelands Rub, and Coffee Rub also contain raw brown sugar, to add some stickiness when used as braai seasoning or as part of marinade.

RUBS vs SEASONING
The primary difference between a butcher's rub and a seasoning is the particle size. Butcher's rubs are more coarse, which helps prevent the seasonings from burning during dry heat cooking, and are the best options for a braai. Seasonings are better for dishes with shorter cooking times and less intense heat.

Winelands Rub, Coffee Rub, and Argentinian Chimichurri are our signature rubs and are quite coarse, but it can also be used during normal cooking. (Because of the particle size it normally doesn't work well as table seasoning, unless you like chewing on paprika flakes and whole peppercorns....)

Aladdin's Magic is one of our all-time favourites. It works very well as a rub, but has a finer size because it is also widely used in kitchen cooking by many of our customers.

Black is a coarse table seasoning (give it a moment and everything but the sesame seeds will dissolve), but it also works well as a rub.

BRAAI RUBS vs BRAAI SALTS
We sell Braai Rubs, not Braai Salt; and we feel quite strongly about it.

Braai Rubs are spice mixes with some added salt. As indicated above, most of our mixes contain just enough salt to enhance the flavour, which means that most people would want to add salt when cooking or braaiing. We focus on the spices to give you maximum flavour, which is why we list all the ingredients on the bottle – it's all about the flavour. Everybody has salt on hand, and it can be added as needed.

Braai Salt, as the name implies, is mostly salt, with a little bit of spices for flavour. Adding more braai salt wil only increase the salt content, not the flavour of your dish. If you want to add more flavour, you will need to add spices and herbs. Braai salt should also be avoided by people on low-sodium diets.
